Wind tunnel tests conducted by specialist engineers have shown that if the tent design is too rigid, extreme wind speeds can push the construction beyond its performance limits. When developing the ASYLUM, our new alpine expedition tent, we therefore decided to combine our REAL TUNNEL and REAL DOME designs to create a geodesic hybrid that was both stable enough and flexible enough to withstand storm force winds.

Both constructions utilise variable diameter pole sections that flex in a specific way. In the REAL TUNNEL design, the lower segments of the poles are more stable, while the REAL DOME poles sections are stronger in the roof area. Combining the two designs gives the ASYLUM the desired stability and flexibility at critical areas of the geodesic construction.

In tests, this REAL TUNNEL DOME construction was able to withstand wind speeds of up to 130 km/h without sustaining any damage. In light winds, the tent is perfectly stable without the guylines and since it is also built to withstand snow loading, it is highly suitable for winter and high mountain use.

Additional advantages of the design are the generous internal space, courtesy of the steeper sides, and optimal use of the available space in the vestibule area. Best quality fabrics, like the extremely light and tough SILICON HT NYLON RIPSTOP 40D, and a superb build quality make the tent extremely reliable. It is also equipped with all round storm flaps for winter use and to deliver extra protection in high winds.

CORE YARN

We use different materials to make our socks, depending on what they are going to be used for. Here is an overview of the materials and their main characteristics: - Acrylic: fast drying - Cotton: a natural material that is pleasant to wear - CoolMax: a fast-drying polyester with a special structure, which wicks moisture quickly away from the skin - Cordura: a highly abrasion-resistant fabric for greater durability - Dri-Release: an extremely fast-drying, polyester fabric - Elastan: a very stretchy synthetic fibre for the perfect fit - Friction Free: a special, silicon nylon yarn which reduces friction and prevents blisters - Isolfil: a hollow fibre for active moisture management and rapid drying - Merino wool: a natural, warm material, which remains warm even when wet, is non-scratchy and smells better than synthetic fibres, also prevents blisters - Polyamide: provides good shape retention - Polypropylene: for active moisture transport - Thermolite: a three-component synthetic fibre, which provides good thermal retention - Wool: a naturally warm material
SEALING

Special stitching is used to seal seams which cannot be sealed using other techniques. The stitching seam has a high tearstrength polyester core which is encased in cotton. When the cotton fibres get wet they expand sealing the stitching hole. The polyester core is specially designed not to wick moisture.

CORNER EDGES

This detail on our REAL TUNNEL TECHNOLOGY tents provides optimum use of available space in the vestibule. 30 cm vertical pole sections integrated in the tent wall form a more perpendicular angle to the ground allowing a full use of space in this part of the tent.

Weighing just 50g/m2, this dense weave polyamide fabric incorporates a matrix of rip stop threads. Used as an inner cabin fabric for light weight tents, it provides the ideal combination of weight, durability, (water) drop repellence and breathability.
groundsheet: lightweight, waterproof coated HYDROFILM POLYESTER

This versatile synthetic fibre absorbs only 0.5% of its own weight in moisture and thus holds its shape well, even when wet. Also highly UV-resistant, it is durable and is easily coated or laminated. It is versatile characteristics mean that we use it on a wide range of products from clothing to equipment and shoes.

poles: DAC FEATHERLITE NSL

Featherlite NSL is the latest development of tent pole from aluminium specialists DAC. It offers the best strength-to-weight performance of any pole on the market. To achieve the desired strength and flexibility, two different diameters are seamlessly connected. The ultra-lightweight connector pieces are protected by additional inserts and provide an incredibly strong connection. This construction makes the poles particularly easy to pitch.
